Media and Popular Culture: You Are Not The Father!

I'm pretty sure that you have heard the infamous phrase on one of the most popular daytime talk shows of all time- Maury Povich. This "popular" program meets the approval of a large number of audiences. Maury is known for his paternity test shows. When watching we know that we will be entertained. I realize that this show has a mass audience and for that they continue to produce theses type of shows. I think this show reflects our culture today. Back in the day the this sort of show would not have gotten any ratings. Nowadays our culture places value and cultural preoccupations on theses type of issues. In our society we would rather watch television about a female having five kids with many men, not knowing who the father is. Therefore do you think our culture's preoccupation will continue to be of sex and infidelity? I think that the media is so open now the the importnce of these issues will remain a high priority and we will continue to see shows like Maury Povichfor years to come.

  1. Recent reports have come out saying that teen pregnancies have risen across the country by 3 percent, and a lot of fingers have been pointed by the media at schools who teach abstinence over sex ed. I remember getting both angles in school but i think it's interesting that shows like Maury air in the late afternoon, right in the time window where teens are coming home from school, turning on the TV, and being exposed to this media and assuming that the behavior is culturally acceptable

  2. To me these shows are pure entertainment value. I think that the producers come up crazy topic just so people will tune in and watch to see what other crazy stuff they come up with. I also think that some people watch this type of television along with reality TV to make their own life seem normal. It's a way for individuals to assimilate with other people when they might feel like their the only one feel that way or in that situation.

  3. I would agree that people like to see that their problems are no so bad. Reality tv.... don't even get me started. true, it is my guilty pleasure, but how can they even call it that! it so strange to think that we are infatuated with reality TV when it is actually the the Opposite of reality. initially it may have been more pure reality, but i feel like that has changed. its a strange obsession.

Like it says in culture code we are an adolescent country infatuated with other peoples ability to not grow up!

perhaps it has to to with the rival theory, seeing people preform things we do day to day makes us feel a connection with them or an understanding of their feelings.
